KRANHAUS SÜD // Efficiency

Far beyond average

The first Kranhaus on the square: Southern Kranhaus

The standard of interiors at the Southern Kranhaus sets benchmarks. The impressive building structure and services engineering meets all demands on modern offices and comprises an innovative energy concept, in which sustainability is the highest priority. Because sustainability has a positive effect not only on the environment, but also on operating costs.

Top energy efficiency

The Southern Kranhaus uses the heat generated in the power plant process of electricity production for heating, without any further use of fossil fuels. For this purpose, the Southern Kranhaus was connected to the local heat network of Rhein Energie AG, Cologne. Innovative technologies are also applied in cooling, which uses groundwater from the building's own wells.

Top cost efficiency

The Southern Kranhaus uses thermal mass activation, which cools or heats the ferro-concrete ceilings with the aid of water pipes. Additional underfloor convectors are used to cater to individual heating and cooling needs. This makes space-consuming radiators unnecessary and improves the flexibility of furnishing.

The Southern Kranhaus was constructed with a double skin facade. The space in-between holds an electronically controlled sun protection, which can be used independent of wind conditions. This supports the protection of natural resources by avoiding an undesired heating of the offices.

The offices are endowed with room-high picture windows which can be opened manually. Thanks to the double skin facade fresh air supplies are secured even under high wind load. Of course, the Southern Kranhaus in addition is equipped with convenient mechanical ventilation which directs fresh air into the offices through the facade.

All these measures enable the responsible usage of valuable resources and make a sustainable contribution to lowering the operating costs. They further provide high convenience for the leaser and space for development.
